Monastery of Tiger's Nest: Without question, this is the most famous and revered location in all of Bhutan. For the locals, it is a place of pilgrimage and the holy monastery of Guru Rinpoche. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche arrived here on a tiger and meditated for three months. It provides an amazing view of the surroundings as it hugs the rock wall above the Paro Valley. You can enter this lovely monastery with a normal entry pass. Aside from the breathtaking vistas, one of the attractions here is the cave temple located inside the monastery.
Punakha Dzong: Almost every national asset in Bhutan is housed in the second-largest Dzong (fortress). Constructed during the years 1637 and 1638, it stands as the second-oldest structure in Bhutan. It is also the last resting place of the tetrön Pema Lingpa and the sacred relics of Ngawang Namgyal. Since not a single nail was used during the building, the fort itself is a marvel of architecture. Worth your time are the sacred relics of the Southern Drukpa Lineage and a sizable collection of exquisite artwork.
National Museum of Bhutan: The National Museum of Bhutan is a veritable treasure trove of Bhutan's rich history. It contains around 3,000 exhibits that document Bhutan's culture throughout the past 1,500 years. Everything from antique sculptures to current paintings can be found here. The natural history section catalogues the entire region's vegetation, fauna, and wildlife. There is an entire section dedicated to ceremonial masks used in Bhutanese festivals. A comprehensive photo collection documents and displays the cultural timeline. The museum also serves as a location for traditional dance ceremonies.
Zuri Dzong: This is one of Bhutan's oldest standing dzongs, dating from the 12th century. Zuri Dzong is a historically and culturally significant monument because it is believed to have been built on the site of a cave where Lord Buddha meditated in the eighth century. The 5-story-tall structure, enclosed within double palisade walls and accessible only via a bridge, provides breathtaking views of the Paro Valley. This is one of the nicest and most popular hiking spots in the area.
Jigme Dorji National Park: Jigme Dorji National Park is a veritable treasure trove of wildlife conservation. It is home to several unique animal and bird species, including the Snow Leopard, Indian Leopard, Serow, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Blue Sheep, Sambar Deer, Barking Deer, Pika, Marmot, Goral, Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Ravens, and Black Musk Deer. With such a diverse wildlife population, the National Park has a healthy ecosystem as a result of rigorous conservation efforts. In addition to the animals, the park has 300 medicinal plant species and approximately 39 butterfly species.
Summer (June to August): Summer in Bhutan is warm and lush. This is a great time to see vibrant landscapes and blooming flowers. However, it can be rainy, especially during monsoon season.
Winter (December to February): Winter offers clear skies and crisp air. This season is perfect for trekking and enjoying the stunning mountain views. The temperatures can be quite cold, so pack accordingly.
Monsoon (July to September): The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall. While this can deter some tourists, it also means fewer crowds. The countryside is beautifully green, making it a photographer's paradise.

By Rail: While Bhutan does not have a railway network, visitors can reach the nation by train via New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in West Bengal, India. This significant railway hub is well-connected to many Indian cities, including Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai. Travellers can continue their journey to Bhutan by road from New Jalpaiguri, either by hiring private cabs or joining organized excursions, and experience amazing views along the way.
