Varanasi will celebrate Dev Deepawali on November 27 and is planning to turn the entire Ganga riverfront into a dazzling show. According to sources, more than 12 lakh lamps will be illuminating the iconic location this year, with one lakh of these lamps made from cow dung contributing to the glowing display.
Reports state that the festival will not confine itself to traditional illumination; instead, it will feature laser and cracker shows at the Ganga Dwar of Shri Vishwanath Dham and Chetsingh Ghat, thereby adding a modern flavor to the festivities.
The local authority is leaving no stone unturned in preparations for the great event, anticipating an inflow of people, including international tourists. Beyond the ghats, extensive preparations are underway, led by District Magistrate S Rajalingam, who has asked tourism department officials to engage with Dev Deepawali groups.
This year’s festival will, in an unusual step, extend its radiance to the opposite banks of the Ganga. Officials have revealed plans to illuminate all 85 ghats with an astounding variety of 12 lakh diyas, including 11 lakh earthen lamps and an extra 1 lakh diya made from cow dung.
A mesmerizing light and sound presentation on mythology will take place on Kashi’s medieval ghats, adding to the visual extravaganza. Rajendra Kumar Rawat, Deputy Director of the Tourism Department, revealed details on this attraction, adding that a light and sound performance with holographic projections will grace Chet Singh Ghat. The 25-30 minute intermission show will relate the mythological connection between Lord Shiva and Kashi, blending lasers, lighting, and music to provide a unique sensory experience.
A meeting with boatmen was also organized before the festivities to emphasize safety precautions. Authorities warned boat operators not to operate while intoxicated, to avoid overloading, to display passenger capacity, and to have safety equipment on board.
The police also performed breathalyzer checks for boatmen at numerous ghats, demonstrating their commitment to a safe and pleasant Dev Deepawali celebration in Varanasi.
