Travelers on the road, take note. This year, the Manali-Leh national highway is officially closed.According to reports, the Manali-Leh national highway has been officially closed since November 20 due to the cold weather and potential hazards associated with driving. This directive was issued by the administrators of Lahaul-Spiti and Ladakh, and it informed the closure of key roads such as Gramphu-Kaza, Darcha-Sarchu, and Darcha-Shinku La.

According to reports, this precautionary measure was implemented to mitigate the risks posed by icy roads and ensure the safety of travelers. It goes on to say that in order to give snow on the highway enough time to melt naturally, the road closure will last for about six months, or until May of the following year.

In response, a Lahaul administration official stated that those found violating the closure orders and attempting to travel the route during this time would face severe consequences.

Officials have made it clear that vehicle travel from Manali to Darcha will be allowed despite the closure, though this will also depend on favorable weather. The decision to close the Leh-Manali road was made in response to reports of icy roads, particularly at high altitudes in mountain passes, and cars becoming stuck in the severe cold.

With effect from November 20, the order from the Ladakh administration strictly prohibits driving from the Upshi police check post in Leh towards Darcha. In order to minimize inconvenience, the administration has asked the local police department to strictly enforce these orders and has recommended travelers not to travel during this time.

Notably, the Manali-Leh route sees a high number of rescues each year as travelers frequently become stranded. The Border Roads Organization (BRO) and Lahaul-Spiti police play critical roles in these rescue operations. Two instances of snowfall have already been reported this year in October and November, prompting the closure of the highway, which is also aimed at prioritizing public safety in the face of challenging weather conditions.
